Kanailal joined a revolutionary group called Jugantar, headed by Barindra Kumar Ghosh, who was one of its founding members. During the protests against the Partition of Bengal, Kanailal Dutta was at the forefront of the Chandannagar group. In May , Kanailal and other revolutionaries were arrested by the British government as suspects in the Muzaffarpur Bomb Case.

Kanailal killed Naren Goswami, one of his associates who had changed sides and become an approver for the British government. The motive behind killing Naren was more than just taking revenge. The law stipulated that testimony in the Magistrate's Court could only be admitted as proof in the Sessions Court once the Defence had exercised its right to cross-examine the witness.

By assassinating Goswami, the potentially incriminating evidence provided by him was rendered inadmissible in Court, and hence the legal threat posed to Aurobindo and other revolutionaries were rescinded. Kanailal was sentenced to death in Alipore jail due to his revolutionary activities.
